Walker's paintings of sun-drenched private swimming pools, elegant sunbathers and stylish modernist apartments appear to depict a life of affluence and luxury.

But not all is as it seems – the figures represented are in fact actors hired by the artist, playing out roles such as mother, daughter, friend, lover or holidaymaker.

The deeper you delve into the work, the more complicated things become. Sometimes the people shown might be the owners of expensive properties relaxing with their guests and having fun, but then these same people reappear in the roles of housekeepers, ground staff and cleaners.

Walker's paintings, which have exclusively depicted women to date, are devoted to exploring the relationship between gender and architecture and she often plays on expectations of the woman's role in the home.
