Revolutionary Light: Blake, Kapoor, Turner

The Whitworth

5 July – 1 September 2013

Three equally brilliant, yet utterly diverse artists form this display of standout works from the Whitworth's collection.

Using light for dramatic effect tests the true skill of an artist. And who better as examples of this than Blake, Kapoor and Turner?

Whitworth Gallery certainly thinks so as these three accomplished names are brought together in a display that concludes light can be 'revolutionary' to art.

Blake's intense religious imagery uses light in blasts and beams to convey a range of emotion, from adoration to majesty to horror, while Kapoor mixes darkness with luminosity in a series of mystical etchings titled 'Blackness from her Womb'.

Turner's death bed proclamation that 'the sun is God' is made evident in a choice selection of landscape paintings, each a testament to the way he used light to create beauty in paint.
