Summer Exhibition 2013
10 June – 18 August 2013
Now in its 245th year, the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition is the world's largest open submission display and brings together painting, photography, sculpture, film and architecture to provide a compelling insight into the contemporary art world.
One of the most exciting aspects of the annual event is that it is 'chosen and hung by artists', with Royal Academicians Norman Ackroyd and Eva Jiricna taking up the mantle for this year's show.
After whittling down from more than 10,000 entries, their final selection features the works of a diverse array of artists – from talented newcomers to the established big hitters – including Grayson Perry, Michael Craig-Martin, Anthony Caro and the newly elected Academicians Sean Scully and Jock McFadyen.
One notable highlight is El Anatsui's site based installation in the Academy courtyard. Created from aluminium bottle-tops, printing plates and roofing sheets, it is one of the largest wall hanging sculptures he has ever created and adorns the façade of Burlington House.
The exhibition is sponsored by Insight Investment.
