Alive: In the Face of Death

Walker Art Gallery

17 May – 15 September 2013

Powerful portraits of people living in the face of death.

Suffolk mother-of-one, Sandra Barber, a breast cancer surviver who is undergoing treatment for a brain tumour.

British photographer Rankin made his name as a celebrity photographer. However, his new show at the Walker Art Gallery investigates our perception of mortality and how we cope with what he refers to as ‘life in the face of death’.

He put out a call in Merseyside asking for subjects who were ‘running out of time’ or who had gone through life-threatening experiences. Those chosen have their story recounted in the show alongside their portrait. The whole project will be the subject of a Culture Show documentary for BBC2, screened this summer.
