Kara Walker

The MAC

24 January 2013 – 27 April 2014

The American artist is best known for her room-sized black cut-paper silhouettes that examine racial and gender tensions in the US.

The gallery is filled with works that reveal the breadth of Walker's art; from intimate watercolours and large scale graphite drawings to printed text pieces, film and a new cut paper piece that was produced at the exhibition's previous showing at Camden Arts Centre in London.

Walker's current research project is focused on the white supremacist movement in America and the exhibition features characters from throughout history, drawing on events from the time of slavery as well as more recent racial tensions.

As such, images in the display reference history, literature, culture, and human behaviour – all connected by a common exploration of power.
