Uwe Wittwer: In the Middle Distance
18 January – 16 March 2013
Abbot Hall's first exhibition of 2013 places the Zurich-based artist's new oil paintings alongside the old masters that inspired them.
Swiss painter Uwe Wittwer takes European old master paintings as the starting point for his oil paintings, inverting and altering works from Watteau to Constable to explore themes of violence, legitimacy and deception. Wittwer played a key role in planning this exhibition, which features a number of new pieces.
The centrepiece of the exhibition is Wittwer's full-size interpretation of Abbot Hall's iconic work The Great Picture. Made especially for the show, the five-metre-wide painting is an unsettling transformation of the 17th-century triptych.
