Journey into the Light

Coventry Cathedral's golden jubilee exhibition reunites the preparatory work of Epstein, Sutherland, Piper and others with their finished pieces for the new Cathedral.

When it was inaugurated in 1962, Sir Basil Spence’s new Coventry Cathedral standing next to the bombed-out ruins of the old building became a symbol of national regeneration. The architect commissioned Britain’s best artists and craftsmen to produce stained glass, tapestries and sculpture for its interior, in the process creating an unparalleled collection of modern Christian art. Fifty years on, this exhibition places preparatory sketches and models by Sir Jacob Epstein, Graham Sutherland, John Piper, John Hutton, Geoffrey Clarke, Elisabeth Frink and others beside the finished masterpieces that make up Spence’s ‘casket of jewels’.
