This exhibition will present a selection from August Sander's photographic project People of the 20th century in which the artist aimed to document the German people, and in doing so created an extraordinary record of human lives.
Through its existing partnership with the National Galleries of Scotland, Duff House already hosts a high quality collection of portraits and miniatures from the 17th to 20th century. Duff House will explore works in this collection through Sander's practice in order to engage audiences in a contemporary conversation about self-image and identity.
What the critics say
The archive, the notion of seriality, high art's dalliances with the methods of the scientist or researcher, all owe something to this all-encompassing project.
