Figures and Fictions
12 April – 17 July 2011
This exhibition introduces the work of seventeen vibrant and sophisticated photographers, working in post-apartheid South Africa. This exhibition offers an insight into the art and identity of modern South Africa.Their exciting and inventive images are a localised response to the country's powerful rethinking of wider national issues of identity across race, gender, class and politics. Many are stand out images from photographic essays, depicting people within their individual, family and community lives, practicing religious customs, observing social rituals, wearing street fashion or existing on the fringes of society. As a result, they also investigate the boundaries between documentary and fine art photography.
