This exhibition at the Pier Arts Centre in Stromness will feature twenty small paintings by Alex Katz spanning forty years from the late 1960s and a powerful eight-part work by Cy Twombly in watercolour and gouache, from 1979. Beautiful Being will allow audiences in the North to view work by two of the leading contemporary painters of our time. The simple act of painting an image has been an important focus for peoples around the world over many centuries. From recent discoveries in Orkney of painted stone dating from the Neolithic period, to the work of contemporary artists, organising the visual world with pigment and brush has been a constant and vital means of expression. The paintings of Alex Katz and Cy Twombly represent two very different ways of working with paint " mannered modulation of tone and form next to a more spontaneous and atavistic flush of line and colour. However, both artists' work share a sentient beauty achieved through deceptively effortless means.
