The exhibition will celebrate this great artist, who, though he died in his prime, reshaped European art, and his publisher, the great collector Jean de Jullienne.
The Watteau part of this show features the great Watteau canvasses in the Wallce collection, redisplayed in a new intimate space. This is combined with a celebration of the taste of one of his most important patrons, Jean de Julienne. Their relationship helped alter the course of eighteenth century French painting, as Watteau revitalized the Baroque style, and invented the fête galante.De Julienne's collecting habits, his patronage of contemporary Dutch and French painters, led a new group of collectors who were not related to the court and he distrubted Watteau's works at the artist's death, ensuring his posthumous reputationThe exhibition will provide an opportunity to present new research on the Wallace Collection's Watteau paintings and view them in the context of more recent developments in Watteau studies.
