Venice: Canaletto and his Rivals

Few art lovers would fail to recognise Canaletto's views of Venice.

The first major exhibition of its kind in the UK, some of Canaletto's most famous paintings can be seen alongside works by rivals such as Guardi, Bellotto, and Marieschi, and the many other artists working to satisfy the demand for souvenirs from those on the Grand Tour.

What the critics say

The most comprehensive exhibition ever devoted to the subject, Birminghams 'The Poetry of Drawing' is groundbreaking. It pulls attention away from the romantic narratives with which the Pre-Raphaelites are associated and focuses instead on their formal qualities.
