- Thursday 15 March 2018 - 11:00 until 13:00
This event is a guided tour of Goldsmiths' Hall and the London Assay Office. The hall is the home of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, one of the twelve great Livery Companies of the City of London. Granted its Royal Charter in 1327, the Company has been responsible for the testing and hallmarking of precious metals for over 700 years, and now includes platinum and palladium as well as gold and silver. The Assay Office was established in 1478 and continues to use traditional hand-marking and "touch testing", as well as the latest laser techniques, to apply the famous Leopard's Head town mark of London.
The tour will be guided by renowned hallmarking expert David Merry FIPG (BBC's Antiques Uncovered, Fake Britain, Heir Hunters etc), who will initially introduce the early and current hallmark legislation. The group will then continue then visit the training area to see the tools of the trade, with the opportunity to watch highly-skilled staff in action and learn about all aspects of the industry, including the verification of antiques and the seizing of counterfeits.
This event has been organised by the Kent Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
