Chaucer Reading to the Court of Richard II: A Cambridge Art Treasure

  • Worsall Village Hall |
  • Lecture |
  • Thursday 22 February 2018 - 14:30 until 16:30

This picture is one of the finest in the collection of illustrated manuscripts in the Parker Library, Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and has been subject to many interpretations.

Elizabeth Conran will be discussing its context and importance and offers a new approach, arguing that it is a tribute to Katherine Swynford, wife of John of Gaunt.  The unknown artist is clearly innovative and talented and has found a way to say a great deal about Katherine, her achievements, her connections and appearance as well as producing one of the very first family portraits in European art.

This event has been organised by the Durham and Cleveland Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
