Thomas Chippendale, Lecture & Lunch

  • Thursday, 11 January 2018 - 11:30 until 14:30

2018 is the tercentenary of the birth of Thomas Chippendale in Otley, a name surely known to everyone with the least interest in English furniture and cabinet making. There are to be exhibitions all over the country in celebration of the event and Nicholas Merchant will give a fascinating talk on one of the greatest cabinet makers of all time.

Leaving his native county and setting up in St Martin’s Lane in London, Chippendale became renowned not only for his artistry as a cabinet-maker, but also as an entrepreneur who in 1754 produced his “The Gentleman and Cabinet-Makers Directory”. This was the first time a book of furniture designs had been published. It enjoyed a wide circulation amidst the cognoscenti, but also carried the designs across the Atlantic to America and was even translated into French.

Price £20. Time for talk 11.30. Lunch (at preferential rate) to include wine, and coffee £22. Please indicate if you require lunch when booking. Ample parking. Sat Nav BD23 3AY.

This event has been organised by the West Yorkshire Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
