- Wednesday, 8 November 2017 - 10:30 until 12:30
This curator-led tour will focus on the Turner Contemporary's first exhibition of Jean Arp’s work in the UK since his death in 1966.
Jean Arp is one of the most renowned artists of the 20th century. From his early collages and reliefs made with simple materials, to the later biomorphic sculptures evoking leaves, pebbles and other natural forms for which he is best known, Arp’s diverse practice had a poetry and playfulness at its core that is as engaging for audiences today as it was in the early decades of the 20th century. His role in stylistic developments such as Dada, Surrealism and Abstraction as well as his collaborations with leading figures of the European avant-garde make him a fascinating artist through whom we can view the artistic developments of the 20th century. The Poetry of Forms will provide a unique and long-overdue opportunity to evaluate the impact Arp had on the British avant-garde. In addition, it assesses his legacy for a younger generation of artists and introduces his work to new and diverse audiences.
This landmark exhibition comprises over 80 loans of work, the majority of which have never been seen in the UK. As well as drawings, collages, paintings, wood reliefs and sculptures, the exhibition includes some of Arp’s poetry and writings.
This event has been organised by the Kent Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
