- Study Day |
- Wednesday, 8 November 2017 - 11:00 until 17:00
Exclusive visit including introduction and guided tour of the permanent collection, followed by study afternoon of the Jan Steen exhibition; with optional visit to Lapworth Museum of Geology, short listed for the Art Fund Museum of the Year Prize 2017.
Set in a stylish Art Deco building on Birmingham University’s Edgbaston campus, the Barber Institute was founded by Lady Barber in 1932 for “the study and encouragement of art and music”. Today its world famous art collection includes works by Botticelli, Rubens, van Dyck, Claude, Turner, Gainsborough, Monet, Rodin, van Gogh, and many more acclaimed artists. The visit will begin with an introduction by Robert Wenley, Head of Collections, followed by guided tours of the main galleries. After a break for lunch (not included in price) there is a special study afternoon of the Barber’s new exhibition of Jan Steen, which will include a talk by the curator from the Mauritshuis on his history paintings, and another on Steen and the theatre. There will also be an opportunity to walk to the nearby Lapworth Museum of Geology, where the Director will introduce us to the acclaimed interactive displays of their collection, for which they were short-listed to win the Art Fund prize for Museum of the Year. Includes tours, talks, study afternoon, morning and afternoon tea and coffee. Lunch not included but there are numerous cafes nearby.
This event has been organised by the Worcestershire Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
