Lecture by Roger White on The Cottage Ornee
- Leigh Village Hall |
- Lecture |
- Sunday, 5 November 2017 - 15:00 until 16:30
The Cottage Ornee is a fascinating building type evolved in England from the mid-18th century and reaching its apogee during the Regency period when it was the height of fashion (as confirmed by references in Jane Austen’s novels).
It is the only architectural genre to cover the entire social spectrum, from simple peasants to royalty but it appealed particularly to the sophisticated middle and upper classes, who liked the idea of living what they thought of as ‘ the simple life’.
Roger White is the pre-eminent authority on the 'cottage ornee‘ and his forthcoming book is being published by Yale.
This event has been organised by the Dorset Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
