East London, by Charles Saumarez Smith

  • Monday 10 July 2017 - 18:30 until 20:00

East London has changed more dramatically than any other part of the city over the last thirty years. From a desolate, often derelict, state after the bombing of the Second World War, it has become one of the most fashionable neighbourhoods in the world, with new developments in Canary Wharf and the Olympic Park, as well as Spitalfields Market and Brick Lane.

Charles Saumarez Smith is Secretary and Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Arts and has lived in the area since the early 1980’s. From his new book, East London, he shares his explorations - both historical and geographical - describing the unique character of spaces and places, new and old. Through photographs taken on his travels, the old villages that make up East London are shown to offer unexpected and fascinating discoveries.

A book signing and wine reception will follow the talk. East London by Charles Saumarez Smith is published by Thames & Hudson.

This event has been organised by the London Events Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
