Full day small coach tour, with lunch.

Halswell House is one of the great houses of Somerset. A new owner, Edward Strahan, has made heroic progress in bringing this house back to its former glory. Halswell was rebuilt in 1689 by Sir Halswell Tynte, heir to the Halswell family, whose Tudor to Jacobean house is built into the back of the new building. A grand front in the Wren style looks out towards the Bristol Channel. The tour shall see something of the interior (still very much work in progress).

The park was embellished with temples by Sir Charles Kerneys Tynte (owner 1740-85), who was a friend of those other landscape makers Henry Hoare of Stourhead and Coplestoe Bampfylde of Hestercombe.

The tour will see the Rotunda (1755) above the house, and visit the Temple of Harmony (1764-5). Visible high on the hill above will be Robin Hood’s Hut (1765), a Gothic cottage, now Landmark Trust. In the village at the park gates, there are Almshouses of 1780 by the churchyard. In the church, the magnificent memorials go from the effigies of the Halswells of the 17th century to the memorials to the Tyntes by the leading sculptors of the 18th century, Rysbrack and Nollekens. Julian Orbach, the tour leader, revised the Sir Nikolaus Pevsner’s Building of England series - Somerset & South West, published in 2014. This volume includes Halswell and Goathurst, which is the focus of this whole day tour. He lectures frequently on historic buildings and has led specialist tours in Somerset and Wiltshire. He has co-authored three volumes in the Building of Wales series, and has been Architecural Advisor to the Victorian Society.

The tour includes travel by a small coach and will leave from Bath Hill East Car Park in Keynsham, BS31 1HH, where all day parking is available. Lunch is included in the price and will be taken at the award winning Hunstile Organic Farm, Goathurst.

Please arrive to meet coach by 9.20am.

This event has been organised by the Bristol and Bath Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
