An opportunity to have a guided tour of Darnaway Castle, seat of the Earls of Moray. The guide will be John Douglas Stuart, 21st Earl.
Darnaway Castle is approximately two and a half miles from Forres in an impressive woodland setting. The original castle was probably built by Thomas Randolph, 1st Earl. It was rebuilt in 1802-12 in the style of a Gothic French mansion but retaining the medieval Banqueting Hall, built in 1450 with it's almost unique hammerbeam roof and capable of accommodating 1000 men.
Once the centre of the powerful province of Moray, the original castle was associated with the Dunbar, Gordon, Douglas and Murray families before being acquired by the Stuarts in 1562.
The tour will be rounded off with tea and coffee at the castle.
The Mosset Tavern, Forres, has been recommended for those wishing to meet for lunch prior to the event. Suggested time 12noon. For the Castle tour please rendezvous in the Mosset Tavern car park at 2pm.
This event has been organised by the Highlands Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
