Deene Park is a largely 16th century house incorporating a medieval manor built around a courtyard and has important rooms added during the reign of George III. Deene has belonged to the Brudenell family since 1514 and was the seat of the Earls of Cardigan, of whom the most notable was the 7th Earl who led the charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava in 1854.
The house today is the home of Robert and Charlotte Brudenell and the group shall enjoy a private morning guided tour of over 15 rooms often used by the family. There is a large collection of art, furniture and porcelain, together with a display of uniforms and memorabilia of the Crimean war.
The gardens are largely to the south and west of the house and feature fine herbaceous borders and a grand parterre designed by the late David Hicks.
Kirby Hall is one of England’s greatest Elizabethan and 17th century houses, earlier owned by Sir Christopher Hatton, Lord Chancellor to Elizabeth I. Although this vast mansion is partly roofless, the walls show the exceptionally rich decoration that shows that the successive owners were always in the forefront of new ideas about architecture and design. The Great Hall and State rooms remain intact, refitted and redecorated to 17th and 18th century specifications.
The recently restored great gardens (described as the finest in England) were added in the late 17th century by Sir Christopher Hatton the 4th. They have been recreated as they may have appeared at that time with elaborate period style ‘cutwork’ statues, urns, seating and topiary. The parterre garden is a recreation of the type of garden that would have been here in 1690 (plus peacocks).
Ticket includes teas and biscuits on arrival at Deene Park; bring a picnic lunch before leaving Deene for Kirby Hall nearby. The coach departs from the Verulamium Museum, St Albans at 9.30am picking up at Stevenage Station at 10am.
This event has been organised by the Hertfordshire Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
