Founded by Cardinal Wolsey and King Henry VIII, the house boasts 13 Prime Ministers. Stunning architecture includes the Great Hall (now of Harry Potter fame) and also Tom Tower, an early example of gothic revival designed by Wren, an architect of the English Baroque. In the centre of Tom Quad is the statue of Mercury after a design by Giambologna and made famous by Waugh in ‘Brideshead Revisited’. Peckwater quad is one of the first examples of neo-Palladian design. The Cathedral is 12th Century in origin, with many Norman features, and contains much important stained glass. Lunch in the Hall will be an impressive occasion under the imposing hammer-beam vaulting. There will also be an opportunity to visit the Picture gallery, free to Art Fund members.
This event has been organised by the Berkshire Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
