The French style of its architecture and formal gardens have led to Boughton being called ‘The English Versailles’. Rebuilt in the late 17th century by the 1st Duke of Montagu, who had been Ambassador to France, the house contains masterpieces by El Greco, Van Dyck and Gainsborough, and many works by Huguenot artists and craftsmen of whom the Duke was a great patron. This year they form the subject of a special exhibition. The Worcestershire Committee have arranged a private visit when Boughton is not open to the public. An extensive tour of the house and exhibition will be followed by a guided walk in the gardens, which are being restored by the Duke of Buccleuch, including a 21st century garden, inspired by the story of Orpheus.
Morning coffee and a light lunch are included. the Committee have booked a small coach from Worcester Croft Road car park at 8.30am, returning by 7pm; places are £22. For those using their own cars, coffee is at 10.30am before the tour at 11am.
This event has been organised by the Worcestershire Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
