- Saturday, 27 June 2015 - 10:30 until 16:30
Ely Cathedral is an outstanding example of Norman, Early English and Decorated styles in medieval architecture. The study day will give an opportunity to explore it in greater depth than you may have done before and with expert guides. The group assemble at the Refectory Cafe at 10.30am for morning tea of coffee, after which there are two one-hour sessions, with Dr John Maddison (Architectural Historian) on the history of the Cathedral, and Jane Kennedy (Cathedral Architect and Surveyor of the Fabric) explaining what is involved in looking after and repairing the building. Lunch is at the excellent Almonry Restaurant nearby.
In the afternoon the group choose two of the following: 1) a conducted tour of the Cathedral Precinct including Prior Crauden's Chapel and the great monastic barn; 2) a visit up into the octagon (quite a climb); 3) a visit to the Stained Glass Museum with the Curator, Dr Jasmine Allen, which will include a behind the scenes visit to the workroom to see current restoration work.
This event has been organised by the Cambridgeshire Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
