This large Neoclassical building is situated on the south side of the Strand, overlooking the River Thames, and was originally the site of a Tudor palace. It was designed by Sir William Chambers in 1776 following an Act of Parliament, as “Publick Offices”, and further extended with Victorian wings to the north and south.
The tour by a Somerset House guide will introduce the history of this magnificent building from Tudor intrigue to Georgian enlightenment. It will encompass the airy Lightwells and the atmospheric Deadhouse, visiting graceful staircases and the fabulous Edmund J Safra Fountain Court.
This event has been organised by the London Events Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
