- Talk and Tour |
- Wednesday, 3 June 2015 - 10:30 until 15:30
The Abbey of St.Michael "is a little known treasure-trove of history, faith and architecture" and the home to a community of Benedictine monks. The group shall enjoy a guided tour of this flamboyantly French church which houses in its crypt the tombs of the Emperor Napoleon III, his wife, Eugenie, and their son, the Prince Imperial. In addition there are significant murals by the C19/C20 English artist Frank Brangwyn in the abbey interior, offering a rare opportunity to admire the work of an artist who was chosen by John D.Rockefeller to decorate, with Diego Rivera, the RCA building in New York. the group will then make their own way to Farnham before reassembling after lunch to visit Farnham Castle.
For some 800 years the castle served as a palace for the Bishops of Winchester and our guided tour will include a visit to the surviving historic parts, now under the care of English Heritage, as well as to the castle gardens.
There is a café adjoining the Castle grounds.
This event has been organised by the Berkshire Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
