The Guildhall is the home of the City of London’s art collection, assembled since the 1600s. The group will be given a guided tour of the gallery and the Roman Amphitheatre, discovered in 1987 when the original art gallery, largely destroyed in 1941, was finally demolished. Highlights in the gallery include views of London life from the 1600s to the present; John Singleton Copley’s monumental oil painting, Defeat of the Floating Batteries at Gibraltar, which spans two floors; Victorian paintings and sculpture including Pre-Raphaelite works, and the studio collection of Sir Matthew Smith (1879-1959).

This event has been organised by the Oxfordshire Volunteer Fundraising Committee to help raise money for the Art Fund.
