Matisse: From Darkness to Light

The story of Henri Matisse is a complex one, moving from darkness to light, North to South, rejection to success, and poverty to riches. His resilience shines through the brilliant colour of his Niçoise odalisques, the extravagant patterning of his textiles, and the sheer energy of his late cutouts. Not even a wheelchair could steal his desire to express natural forms and rhythms that lift the spirits, even as the ability to paint deserted him. This talk by Hilary Guise offers a compelling background to Tate’s exhibition Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs.
