Peter Grimes - An Audience with Director Phyllida Lloyd
- Leeds Grand Theatre |
- Special Event |
- Tuesday, 10 September 2013 - 12:30 until 17:30
The Art Fund has been fortunate enough to have been offered a sneak preview of Phyllida Lloyd’s award winning production of the opera Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten, which opens at the Grand Theatre on Saturday 14 September. We have been invited to watch a full orchestral matinee rehearsal on Tuesday 10 September where we can observe Phyllida in her role as director.
Phyllida is most well known for directing blockbuster films like Mamma Mia and The Iron Lady and directing an all female cast of Julius Caesar on stage in London and New York but she is equally renowned for her brilliant direction of operas.
The opera Peter Grimes is set in a small fishing community on the English coast. Britten’s atmospheric music takes powerful inspiration from the sea, vividly portraying the human drama unfolding around the outsider Peter Grimes.
Phyllida who is very briefly in Yorkshire before she sets off to New York with Julius Caesar has agreed to give us a pre show talk about her production of Peter Grimes and also to answer any questions anyone may have about her highly successful career in film, stage and opera including her experiences directing Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia and The Iron Lady and how she persuaded Pierce Brosnan to sing in Mamma Mia!
This event has been organised by a local supporter group to help raise money for the Art Fund.
