Marina Vaizey gives a talk on George Bellows, one of the finest early 20th-century realist painters in America and the subject of a spring exhibition at the Royal Academy. A master of the urban landscape and portrait, contemporary critics called him 'rough, frank, original', but he was also a sensitive depicter of both the most refined scenes and the cutting-edge of New York life. 'Art for life's sake' was his motto, and despite his early death at 44 he left more than 600 paintings and thousands of drawings and prints.
This event has been organised by a local supporter group to help raise money for the Art Fund.
