Augustus John and Gwen John

His work has been called brash and shallow and hers dismissed as fussy and spinsterish, assessments not fair to either artist. This lecture takes a careful look at their lives in parallel, until the point of Gwen John's death in 1939. She had no public reputation whatsoever, while her brother enjoyed enormous professional and critical success. When he died, however the positions had been reversed and we will consider the reasons why.

This event has been organised by a local supporter group to help raise money for the Art Fund.
