  • Thursday, 20 October 2011 - 10:00 until 12:00

Valerie Woodgate will give a lecture on Surrealism: a cultural movement beginning in the 1920s which developed from the Dada activities of World War One.

The movement was inspired by the psychoanalytical theories of Sigmund Freud as well as the complex socio-political climate of the time. Surrealist artists explored notions of the irrational and unconscious, of desire and fetish, dreams, nightmares and neuroses.

Valerie's lecture will explore the themes and ideas behind Surrealist art- making and consider the role of the unconscious mind in it.
