Visit to Poltimore House
- Friday, 5 August 2011 - 18:00 until 20:00
Richard Bampfylde built the north and east ranges of poltimore House in the 1550s. Over the centuries the house has seen major changes and several different owners during the 20th century. Since the mid- 1970s the house has suffered badly from neglect and vandalism. Poltimore featured in the BBC 2's 'Restoration' programme in 2004 but narrowly missed out on substantial funding. Now the energetic Poltimore House Trust is starting to restore the house and the 18th century pleasure gardens are being rediscovered. Guides will tell us the history of Poltimore House and show us the work in progress. The gardens will also be open and we will finish with a glass of wine and canapes. This will be the last opportunity to see Poltimore for a while, since it will close for restoration work in mid-August.
