Chelsea's hidden gem was founded in 1673 as the Apothecaries' Garden with the purpose of training apprentices in identifying and utilising plants for herbal remedies. The location by the Thames was chosen specifically to provide a warmer microclimate allowing the growth and survival of many non-native plants in British winters. Thanks to the generosity of Sir Hans Sloane, the current 4-acre site is leased for £5 a year in perpetuity. The garden has a long history as an international centre for the dissemination of botanical knowledge and seed distribution in the field of plant-based medicine. The visit will begin with a two course lunch in the cafe, followed by a guided tour.
