Abbot Hall was built in 1759 for Colonel George Wilson who wished to live in the town of Kendall but desired his home to have the atmosphere of a country house. The ground floor rooms are furnished with 18th Century pictures, furniture and other decorative arts. Abbot Hall is renowned for its collection of paintings and watercolours. There will also be an exhibition there of the work of artist Sheila Fell (1939-1979).

After lunch at Abbot Hall a visit to Gresgarth Gardens in the village of Caton will follow. Gresgarth Hall is the home of the well-known landscape and garden designer Arabella Lennox-Boyd. There, she has created one of the most exciting gardens in England by combining the best of Italian design with British plantsmanship. Modern and classical sculpture is displayed throughout the garden and there are variety of different gardens to visit including the Water Garden and Kitchen Garden. The Head Gardener will also give a short talk.
