The estate was originally purchased by the Earls of Moira in 1660 and a house was built there in the mid 1750s. The estate was bought and extended by the Ker family and the Earls of Clanwilliam in the 19th and 20th centuries until the house was used by US troops during the Second World War. Much of the house was demolished and further damage was caused by a fire in 194. In 1994 the present owner began a 15 year project to restore the house to its former Italianate glory. The east wing was rebuilt, and the original plastered ceilings by Robert West were restored. The house contains a wonderful collection of art and antiques and some sculptures by David Williams-Ellis in the gardens. David Anderson will give a talk on the house's rich history, followed by a tour of the main rooms and garden. Then, afternoon tea, with sandwiches, scones, and cake in the Conservatory. Montalto is not open to the public, so this is an exclusive opportunity for members and guests.
