Exhibition co-curator Katia Pisvin gives an introductory talk to the Royal Academy’s exhibition of drawings by Watteau, best known for his invention of fĂȘtes galantes – small pictures of social gatherings of elegant people in parkland settings. He was also an exceptional draughtsman, and his drawings were praised for their subtlety, freedom of execution and lightness of touch. There are over 80
drawings in the exhibition, demonstrating the range of Watteau’s subject matter, from theatre pieces, portraits and shop interiors
to fĂȘtes galantes.
