Lecture: 'Venice in London- Venetian Influences on English Culture'
- The Menhuin Hall |
- Wednesday 16 March 2011 - 10:00 until 12:00
Using digital images, film, and live examples sung and played on the piano, Peter Medhurst explores the influence of Venetian artists based in London during the 18th Century.
Venetian culture became popular in the 1700's as many English aristocrats frequented the inspiring city on their Grand Tour. Canaletto was one of many Venetian artists who took advantage of this cultural link to look for work in London during a time of recession in Venice. The effect of this exchange is traced by Peter as he explores how English culture took on discernable Venetian characteristics.
