Director Lars Tharp welcomes us to the Museum, which tells the story of the Foundling Hospital, - a monument to 18th century philanthropy. Unwanted infants, (usually the children of unmarried or deserted women) were left here, to be cared for and adopted by the Hospital. The Museum exhibits some of the objects left with the children by their sorrowing mothers and there is also a collection of 18th century paintings - the hospital was supported by Hogarth, Reynolds and Gainsborough and became the first public space in London for the exhibition of art of the day. Handel helped the charity with numerous performances, particularly of Messiah, the score of which is in the Museum.
