Visit and Lecture: Wynyard Hall
- Wynyard Hall |
- Monday, 8 November 2010
The Crown granted tenancy of the Wynyard Estate in 1230 and it has been in use ever since. The present Wynyard Hall was built in the early 19th century, with the foundation stone laid in 1882 and the official opening taking place in 1826. One of the first principal guests was the Duke of Wellington in 1826, a visit commemorated with a striking obelisk that stands in the Hall's parkland today.
It was not until the stewardship of the 3rd Marquis of Londonderry that the Hall became the talk of Europe. The Marchioness, Lady Frances, established herself as the most glamorous hostess in England and with great style the Londonderrys entertained royalty, prime ministers, foreign dignitaries, generals, scholars, writers and artists.
Jennifer Gill will give a lecture about the history of the Londonderry family and the Hall. There will be an opportunity to take a guided tour of the building in the company of Sir John Hall, the present owner.
