As well as rising to the challenge of shouldering much of the industrial and agricultural burdens of their countries during the war, women showed they were just as capable as men of representing the heroism, tragedy and sacrifice of war.

Anthony Kelly is a former university lecturer, with MA and PhD in History of Art from the University of London. He is an expert on the art of the Second World War and has a strong reputation as a speaker.

This lecture will focus on the inspiring achievements of women employed as official War Artists in Britain during WW II, the most accomplished being Laura Knight, Evelyn Dunbar and Ethel Gabain. As a comparison, some works by women artists depicting conflicts from other periods will also be considered.
