Visit: Eltham Palace

Despite its proximity to Eltham High Street, the approach to Eltham Palace over the medieval bridge spanning a moat of water lilies and small islands, is a far cry from the city bustle. The palace has one of the most outstanding Art Deco interiors in London, though little remains of the medieval building, except the Great Hall, built for Edward IV in the 1470s. Henry VIII spent much of his childhood here. The palace was neglected, and almost became a ruin, in the 18th and 19th centuries. The textile millionaire couple Stephen and Virginia Courtauld rescued the building in the 1930s, turning it into a modern design Art Deco showpiece. The gardens are also exceptional. There will be tours of both the house, with a senior member of staff, and the gardens, with the Head Gardener.
