Tour: Royal Hospital, Chelsea, London

A functioning old people’s home is not the usual subject for an Art Fund visit but the home of the Chelsea Pensioners is, most would agree, special. Established by Charles II and supported by later monarchs, built and run without any money allocated by Parliament, the legend of Nell Gwynne’s involvement in its establishment (although she was a benefactor), original architecture by Sir Christopher Wren with the later contributions by several eminent architects, and possessing much art, it is one of the great – and best loved – institutions in Britain. It is also evolving with several developments planned to modernize the place.

Tour conducted by an In-Pensioner and is expected to last two hours. Anyone with access difficulties should note that there are steps to negotiate, without any alternative lift access.
