Lecture: 'Britain and the Collecting of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Paintings', by Christopher Lloyd
- Laing Art Gallery |
Christopher Lloyd, Art Fund Trustee, is a former Surveyor of the Queen’s Pictures and was responsible for a six-part television series on the paintings in the Royal Collection. Currently, Christopher is President of NADFAS, Governor of Gainsborough’s House in Suffolk, and Trustee of the Living Paintings Trust. His lecture will illuminate the role of Britain in collecting Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art. Unlike in America, collecting was undertaken by only a few courageous artists, critics and collectors, as public opinion regarding these developments in French art was hesitant. These brave few saved Britain from cultural disgrace and ignominy by forming the fantastic collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings that are now some of the most popular on view in Britain's galleries and museums.
