Charles V inherited a vast empire including Austria and Hungary, part of Italy and the Low Countries, Spain and its valuable territories in India and the New World.  When it collapsed 400 hundred years later, its passing triggered the 1st World War. This lecture charts the course of this dynasty, its intrigues, tragedies and triumphs, through the glitter and eccentric courts of Vienna, Madrid and Budapest, from the Hapsburgs’ origins as medieval warlords to their end in the trenches of the Great War.
