Lecture - 'George III and Queen Charlotte as Collectors', by The Hon Lady Roberts, Llanfairpwll
- Carreg Mon Hotel |
In spite of the popular view (widespread following the film 'The Madness of King George'), King George III was a keen and serious scholar and collector. Even before his accession in 1760 he had begun to acquire books and drawings. The King's Library, now part of the British Library, was his creation.
After his marriage to the German-born Princess Charlotte in 1761 and the acquisition of Buckingham House (later Palace) in 1762, commissions and acquisitions of paintings and furniture to adorn their new family home followed swiftly.
Jane Roberts, Librarian and Curator of the Print Room for The Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, will demonstrate the differing taste and interests of the King and Queen and will explore the various royal residencies - in London, Richmond and Kew - and at Windsor. Her talk will be illustrated by the many surviving artefacts in the Royal Collection.
