Canaletto: A Lecture by Nigel Goodman, Worcester
- RGS Worcester & Alice Ottley School |
Canaletto received more commissions from English visitors to Venice than from any other nationality. Jospeh Smith, later British Consul, acted as his agent and formed his own collection of over 50 paintings and 140 drawings by the artist which were later sold to George III. When, in the 1740s, war in Europe prevented many tourists from visiting Venice, Canaletto travelled to England where he remained for eight years. He painted many beautiful views of London and elsewhere, including two of Eton College.
Nigel Goodman was for many years a master and house master at Eton. Since retiring to Worcestershire he has become a NADFAS lecturer and written several books.
