Thanks to the activities of the eccentric and art-loving Wittelsbach family, who ruled Bavaria for over 750 years, Munich became one of Europe’s most magnificent cultural capitals. The city boasts at least half a dozen buildings that should be on any list of the world’s most beautiful, including the opera house with its exquisite interior, the summer palace, Schloss Nymphenburg, and the truly astonishing Asamkirche. Munich’s museum collections rival those of London, Paris and Berlin, and the city has been a leading European musical centre since the 16th century, when the composer Orlande da Lassus joined the court of Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria. Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss also have strong connections with Munich’s musical past.
