Lecture - 'Gwen John: An Artist's Life', lecture by Dr Sue Rowe, Bangor
- Main Arts Lecture Theatre |
Gwen John, a native of Wales, spent her adult life in Paris where she painted subtle, inimitable works which earned her a reputation as one of the most remarkable women painters of our age.
For many years she was the subject of a plethora of myths - she was lonely, reclusive, she had fled to France to escape the influence of her more flamboyant brother...Drawing on extensive research, Dr Roe uncovers the truth, revealing that Gwen's relationship with Rodin, for many years a well-kept secret, was a vital influence on her art. She explores her role as a professional painter regularly selling work and painting to commission and uncovers her vivid personality, illustrated with examples of some of her most compelling works.
Dr Sue Rowe is an author, poet and lecturer in Creative Studies at the University of Sussex.
